Most of us spend 8 hours of a working day at work. On top of that some work on the weekends.
Now think about it. Hopefully 8 hours you sleep. 8 hours you are at work. And the rest of it is so called "free time". Depending on the distance one has to commute every day, you may actually end up with anything from 4 to 8 hours left (lucky guys those who get the later!).
So besides meals, kids, going out (much less of that with kids) buying groceries and falling breathless on the couch, renting a video and switching on TV (waste of time most of the time) you are actually spending a third of your life sleeping and another third at work!
These thoughts brought me to a conclusion that work is a lifestyle. Yes many of us would think that this kind of view makes one a workaholic. And yes it is somewhat frowned upon, we are told that one should rest, should stop thinking about work when at home, etc.
However, why not look at that from a different angle? What does one want from a lifestyle one chooses? Well, basically whatever you want Still, rarely we want bad life. Most of us want to have fun, want it to be interesting, fascinating.
So, why not try adopting that same outlook on work? It is my belief that any occupation is capable of being transformed into a better one, whatever "better" means for you.
This all starts with an idea. Often it is enough to ask yourself "what do I want next?"
More, most of us actually take initiative in their lives. As an answer to the question above we like to say "I would like", or "I want" or even just plain "give me that". At least we often know what we DON'T want.
In terms of work this often means being vocal about your ideas, being able to say NO at least for the record at certain moments, and volunteering at others. This means being in charge no matter how low or high you are in the organization's hierarchy. These are your 8 hours, your life, so you might as well live them the way you want.
So, approaching the time you spend at work in the same way you approach your lifestyle most definitely will bring changes. And since you are in control, you most definitely have the power to monitor and re-direct the change driving it to a goal.
This in my opinion is nothing else but innovation.
